Darling Angels

We could not believe that such a day was possible in the middle of summer: cold, wet, windy, the Full Cape Treatment! But, it was the day of the opening of the "Angels" Exhibition in our closest little town, Darling. I thought I would say very little (only this: The glass of Ormonde wine was very welcome!) and rather show lots of photos of the work of my closest artist friends and myself. My own contribution was two very sweet angels, first and second photos and one serious one. There is also a photo of the Mantis Art Gallery where it was held.

I need to say more of my serious angel. I saw this image as a large sculpture in Budapest when I had a solo exhibition there. It was midday and my photo showed a shadow so dark, it looked like a sharp gash through the sculpture. I loved the idea of going against all the rules in art to show a very strong vertical like that through the painting. It can resemble a Cross....and with it evoke some inner emotion and loneliness.

For this exhibition we concentrated on small 8x8 affordable artworks.

  1. What a great idea to have a theme for an art gallery show! There are lots of interesting Angel paintings. Elmie's Angel with the butterfly wings is so cute. Your first two paintings are so light and lively...with a definite contrast to the third which definitely shows a lot of emotion.

  2. The angels are great and so appropriate this time of year. They should be all year.
    Good job Marie.

  5. I agree with Catherine and Carol... this is a wonderful idea for an exhibition! Love your contribution (all three) and your friends angles are lovely too. A wonderful subject to warm the heart on your miserable day! I'm sure you are back to sweltering days now!!!!

  6. How unusual for a gallery to suggest such a theme but a delight to visit I am sure. Your two are really charming with sweet faces and little hands. Lauren's made me think of Chagall's floating images.

  7. Catherine, I must agree we have seen some amazing themed exhibitions here with the emphasis on very small paintings which would sell from as little as $75. So even in tough economic time there are opportunities for buying and selling. Yes, Elmie had good ideas and her wire frames were also very original!

Thank you, Gary, it was fun!

I agree, Carol, the nice thing was that nobody knew how the others were going to interpret the theme. As you see, framed photos were also entered!

    Sweet thought, Marian!

Thank you, Debbie, we hope the angels find homes. And yes, true to form, we had a normal warm day today!

Thank you, Joan! Yes those two belonged with the cherubs while my third one matched the mature angels.

Thank you, Mary, that is really my personal choice as it contains layers of meaning. It would be interesting to see if I sell anything and what buyers prefer.
