A West Coast Studio

A lovely week started with a sale of 5 paintings from my French Belles series. Those were the first sales of this year. This event was followed up with a good clean-up! I needed to re-plan my work space and decided to get all my framed works on the wall as the frames get knocked all the time when they lie around. Here are photos of the completed studio.

My large collection of History of Art books are not in this room, only practical books and art magazines. You can see the work triangle formed with two antique tables where I have a small easel for sitting down, and a large one for standing. The tables are also ideal when grandchildren visit. (Alas, they all live far away) I cover them with plastic table cloths and the kids do what they like. Old paintings get a layer of gesso and become their canvasses. I keep all my old brushes for that reason too.

  6. I'm so happy for you on your sales, Marie--well done! This studio is beautiful and inspiring; thank you for sharing it. My studio in a nook created by my husband, who took a sledge hammer to a large unused garden tub in our master bath is much humbler :>), but I still love it and love working there.

  8. Ronelle, thank you for the lovely comments! Yes it is quite South African with original Cape cottage furniture. I have always collected old things.

Cathyann, I am glad that you like my French belles,! Unfortunately my granddaughters are all over the country and the boys in the States, but I keep the materials ready and they enjoy being artists!

    Thank you, Sherry!

Barb, and who knows, maybe you will sit and paint with me one day. Because of the social media, I often receive Internet friends here!

  9. Thank you, Joan!

Thank you, Sheila, it took me a few years to clutter up this room enough as I can not function in a place that is too clinically impersonal.

Thank you, Mary. Your nook sounds wonderful!Such a good idea!

    Thank you very much, Barbara!

  12. How lovely to imagine you working in this glorious space Marie surrounded by so much of your wonderful work - most inspirational. I thought I had a good collection of art books but all your shelves take the biscuit! I too let the grand children work on old canvases and pads when they stay but my they do get my much smaller space in quite a muddle!

  13. Hi Joan, thank you for your comments. Wherever we paint, I suppose as long as we produce all the time, that is the important thing.

  16. Thank you, Cathy, I enjoyed doing the ocean!

Thank you, Marian. The idea for the kids happened when I decided that artists should really not paint over old paintings as the 'footprint' of the previous work remains there. And the kids love it when they score a large canvas!
